BENEFITING: COVENANT PREPARATORY SCHOOL INC
EVENT DATE: Oct 13, 2012
Most of you walked somewhere today- be it from the couch to the fridge, or maybe to and from work. From time to time, many of you to lace up the shoes to run a couple of miles on a treadmill – perhaps even going outside when feeling particularly adventurous. And then there are those who embark on the ultimate commitment of endurance.
For those remaining few, nothing less will do than pounding out 26 knee-grinding miles – at a good solid pace — over hard hilly asphalt roads. They will train for months in rain and wind and blazing sun, suffering from aching muscles, sore joints, and chafing skin. On the appointed day they will join a huge mob of like minded nutjobs and clog the streets with their sweating huffing bodies as they hurl themselves forward, driven by some weird internal compulsion to run…a marathon.
Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? So why would anyone do this?
There may be many reasons why these people willingly inflict this upon themselves. Some of the most common may include:
- Brain damage
- A morbid love of pain.
- Delusions of athletic grandeur
- A desire to give young people a unique academic opportunity at a school with a mission of providing a rigorous education to underserved areas of Hartford.
That almost certainly a short list of possible motives, but pay special attention to that last one.
Covenant Prep is a tuition-free independent day school for boys grades 5 through 8 living in the under-served neighborhoods of Hartford. The school receives very little federal, and no state or religious funding. It exists because of the generosity of individual donors, chartable foundations/grants, in-kind support of many volunteers, corporate, community and education partners and the AmeriCorps program. Our rigorous liberal arts curriculum begins each day at 7:30 and concludes at 6:45 PM, incorporating athletics, art, music, and community service. With Hartford's public school graduation rate fluctuating between 55-60%, CPS provides a unique opportunity to beat the statistics. Last year, 100% of our eight grade graduates were accepted into private or parochial schools including Avon Old Farms, Choate Rosemary Hall, East Catholic, Kingswood-Oxford, Kent School, Watkinson School, Loomis Chaffee, Northwest Catholic, Marianapolis, Marvelwood School, Rumsey Hall, St. Thomas More, Watkinson, Westminster, and Williston Northampton.
On October 13th, with little to no arm-twisting, a group of CPS faculty, volunteers, and supporters will run various events ranging from a 5K relay to the full marathon. Some of these people are teachers. Some are administrators. Others are friends of CPS. In total, we will be logging over 100 miles as a team. That’s a lot of pavement to cover in one morning.
We are completing this feat of endurance to raise awareness about the education gap prevalent in American cities, particularly Hartford. We are a group of individuals committed to making a change, both inside and outside the classroom. We passionately believe a good education is a right, not a privilege, and are dedicated to providing that opportunity for the youth of Hartford.
Here is how you can help.
Your contribution will directly support Covenant Preparatory School, and have an enormous impact on the life of a young person. Our goal is to raise $2,500 dollars (for runners, that's 2.5K) and are asking our friends and family members to support our mission by donating $5, $10, $25, $50, or any amount you feel comfortable giving.
