I have Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The money I raise by running the New York Marathon will be donated to the American Sleep Apnea Association. I suggest you pledge $1 per mile. I guarantee you I will finish all 26.2 miles!
The goal of my fundraiser is to increase awareness of what I call "The Silent Killer". That is ironic because Sleep Apnea is commonly associated with snoring. But the reality is you never hear yourself snore. Of course your partner does, and that leads to all sorts of other problems. My main point is to let people know that ignoring the problem can have serious, life threatening consequences. Sleep Apnea, which simply means interruption of your breathing during sleep, will reduce your Blood Oxygen levels by as much as 20%, literally starving your body of oxygen. The negative effects of this are systemic, leading to increased risk for diabetes, coronary artery disease and heart disease.
If you have any reason to believe you may suffer from this problem, by all means get yourself tested by a certified sleep study clinic! CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and is the most widely accepted and proven treatment for this condition. CPAP was developed in 1980 and has saved the lives and quality of lives of thousands of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) sufferers. It uses a machine that blows air through a hose into a mask worn by the patient. This positive air pressure literally inflates the closed airway and allows breathing to continue uninterrupted during sleep.
I use my CPAP every night without fail because I know CPAP Saved My Life!
As always, to God be the Glory.
