BENEFITING: Christian Peacemaker Teams
EVENT DATE: May 21, 2013
I’m honored to have been accepted for the May 2013 Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) Palestine-Israel delegation. I’ll fly to Tel Aviv on May 21 and return on June 8.
We’ll “spend some time in Jerusalem and Bethlehem and some time with the CPT Palestine team in the city of Al Khalil (Hebron) and in the South Hebron Hills.” We’ll also “meet with representatives from Israeli and Palestinian peace and human rights organizations to get an overview of the current political situation. And . . . get a taste of CPT Palestine activities such as documenting human rights conditions, taking part in street patrols, and joining with locally-led nonviolent public witness that challenges structural injustices.”
I’m really excited to be visiting the Holy Land – I’ve long wanted to experience the desert and the home of the Abrahamic religions. Traveling there with CPT provides a unique opportunity to visit not as a tourist, but as a concerned citizen acting in service to peace. CPT’s work in inspired by the teachings and example of Jesus, and the organization is committed to peace-making and undoing oppression in all forms. It places teams of trained peacemakers where local groups have requested help in their struggle for social justice. There are currently teams in Palestine, Canada (Aboriginal Justice), Colombia and Iraqi Kurdistan. CPT also offers short-term delegations of about two weeks to each of these project sites.
I look forward to meeting both CPTers and Palestinians practicing nonviolent resistance and learning from their work and their lives. I hope you can join my in-person or virtual slide show and story sharing after I return to the Bay Area.
If you feel moved to support my delegation after seeing the CPT video, please consider becoming part of our (financial) support network by making a donation.
Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers!
