BENEFITING: The Children's Room
ORGANIZER: The Children's Room
EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
I want to first share my deepest gratitude to my family, friends, friends of the family, employers past and present, customers, coaches and members of The Children’s Room community for supporting my fundraising page last year. Together you helped me reflect on my 20 years as a volunteer for The Children’s Room with over $13,000. Raising awareness and money for TCR while running my first dream come true Boston Marathon was a combination that I can best describe as pure joy. I am thrilled the photo I have included captured that pureness. I was filled with so much pride and joy on Marathon Monday that I could not contain it at times. While smiling, thanking and high fiving the thousands of amazing people cheering on the sideline I would burst out “I am so happy! It all feels like a dream! “ My heart and thoughts were packed with all of the dreams left behind from my father, my step-brother, my mother in law, my friends Bob and Tony and the all the parents and siblings from TCR who’s lives and dreams had ended too soon. This experience was so special and so humbling. My joyful sprit inside was rooted by the pure privilege; accomplishing my dream of running the Boston Marathon for The Children’s Room.
In a moment the joy ended. The dream was not quite met. As the minutes and hours and weeks unfolded the gratitude was overwhelming. My family, including my 82 yr old mother who had to walk over 3 miles to safety, were not harmed. The entire 2013 Miles & Memories Team and families were not harmed. The Boston Athletic Association invited us back to run in the 118th Boston Marathon. The choice to run for The Children’s Room was up to us.
The opportunity and the ability to run again, is again… a privilege. The only way I know how to show my gratitude is by continuing to raise awareness and money for The Children’s Room. Each and every time I have listened to a child or teen express how attending TCR has helped them feel not alone and understood, I feel blessed; knowing I am a small piece of a supportive community that offers space and opportunities for children and teens to discover empowerment through the knowledge that grieving is a natural process and is indeed normal. In all the uncertainty that life brings, The Children’s Room offers a home for children and teens to be embraced with, “You are not alone and you will be heard”.
Once again, I would run any distance possible to share this message and honored to do so. The received support last year and this year will without a doubt pick me up and push me along each and every freezing cold and gray winter’s day and make possible the mind challenging long distance runs on the treadmill when the roads are not safe to train on. I so look forward to the many times I would feel like I was being lifted. Runner’s high? Yeah? But I wanted to believe that in an instant all the energy I have spent thinking of my father’s death and life and my life since I was 8yrs old collided… and for a moment we were just together.
“All that we love…deeply…becomes a part of us.” Helen Keller
Every step I take on April 21, 2014 I will be honoring and respecting the opportunity and the ability I have to run while proudly wearing The Children’s Room T Shirt, letting thousands know there is a safe place for grieving children and teens to be…not alone.
When my 52yr old body crosses the finish line I will have carried the Irish proverb that has fuelled my life since I was 8yrs old.
“Do not resent growing old…for many are denied the privilege.”
Please help support this organization that I love and believe in so fully. I want you to know that families that attend TCR are not required to pay anything.
Any contribution you make is appreciated deeply!!
