The Children’s Room creates safe, supportive communities so that no child, teen or family has to grieve alone.
We’re proud to introduce the 15 runners on our 2014 Miles & Memories Team, 7 of whom are returning to the team after having their race cut short by the tragic bombings at last year’s Boston Marathon. Please be sure to read through our team’s personal fundraising pages—we have an amazing group of people running for us this year!
By helping our runners reach their fundraising goals, you’re providing support to families facing the devastating loss of a parent or child.
Children, teens and adults come together for bi-weekly peer support groups at our Arlington center, a welcoming Victorian home. Kids meet with kids their age while parents have their own support group with other parents who have experienced a similar loss. By participating in groups with others who know the sadness of losing a parent or sibling, children have the opportunity to express their feelings in a safe space, and learn that they are not alone in their grief.
One eight-year-old girl who attended group at TCR shared, “I only talked about [my mom’s death] with my dad until we started going to The Children’s Room. It was easy to talk with the adults and kids who had been through the same thing as me… I started to feel better. It’s nice to not feel afraid anymore.”
In addition to talking together during “circle time,” children and teens are free to play games and explore a variety of rooms in the house. Our beautiful art room contains a dazzling display of materials for children to create something to express thoughts that may be hard to put into words. Children of all ages love jumping and playing in the “high energy room,” where padded walls and a large punching bag can safely absorb whatever energy and emotions are thrown their way. There is also a game room devoted to foosball, dress-up and other games where kids can simply be kids among others who understand their grief.
The Children’s Room also serves grieving families far beyond the walls of our Arlington home.
We offer peer support groups for grieving children and teens at schools and community groups in the Boston area, serving those who may not otherwise be able to access grief support services. Our professional staff also provides education and consultation services to families.
We know that grief and loss can be difficult topics to address. Our training, education and community outreach programs enable professionals to gain skills in providing caring and effective grief support to children and families. We also share information and referrals with individuals and professionals who contact us looking for additional support.
Families are able to attend our programs free of charge. All of these services for grieving families wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of donors and volunteers and the efforts of our inspiring Marathon runners.
Thank you for supporting our 2014 Miles & Memories Marathon Team as they prepare to run 26.2 miles for grieving children, teens and families!
