BENEFITING: The Children's Room
ORGANIZER: The Children's Room
EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
Each year on Marathon Monday, my family and I head to Wellesley to watch and cheer on the runners as they pass the half way mark of the marathon. And every year as I walk back to my car, I think next year I’m going to run Boston. But year after year, I’ve come up with some sort of excuse and never actually committed to doing it. This past year was no different until the bombs went off and everything was different. I decided that very evening that no matter what, I would run the Boston Marathon in 2014. So I want to be a part of THIS marathon - the runners, the organizers, the volunteers and all the people that come to watch and cheer. I want to be a part of that world – the one where good people band together to make the world a better place. And what better organization to run for than The Children’s Room whose mission is to create a safe and supportive community for grieving families?
The Children’s Room (TCR) is the largest independent, non-profit organization in MA dedicated to creating safe, supportive communities so that no child, teen or family has to grieve alone.
After Dave was killed, a similar support group (The Circle Group) was set up specifically for the 9/11 families and I can’t begin to explain how beneficial that group was to me as well as my kids.
The Circle Group was a place where I had the opportunity to let down my guard and share with others going through similar experiences. It was a place that our kids were able to look around a room and see other kids who had lost a dad or a mom to the terrorist attacks. They created scrapbooks and dream catchers, and accessed lots of memories while creating new ones.
Because we had the Circle Group, we never needed the services of the Children’s Room. And, although I had always heard good things about TCR, I had never really given much thought to how essential they are to families who have a loss and are NOT a part of a national tragedy.
About 4 years ago, however, I was invited to attend a fundraising breakfast that TCR was holding. I recall sitting at the table with Rebecca on my lap listening to a teenager speak about her experience of grief and how important the Children’s Room has been in her life. With tears streaming down my face, I decided that I wanted to become more involved. I quickly became a supporter and just a few months ago, I joined their board.
I am thrilled and honored to be running the Boston Marathon for the Children’s Room. I am joining two passions - the running of the marathon with supporting an organization I connect with so deeply. I hope that you will help me reach my goal of raising $6,000.
p.s. I am also running with one of my best friends in the whole world, Karen Bock. We've just begun training but it's so much fun having a partner!
