BENEFITING: The Children's Room
ORGANIZER: The Children's Room
EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
Last year I ran the marathon for The Children’s Room in Arlington, MA and will do so again this year. Previously, I ran the Boston Marathon five times for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. These are truly among the most memorable experiences of my life. Two years ago, I was fortunate to have my son run with me, making the day even more special and I am thrilled that he will be running with me again this year. I run the marathon for those who cannot run to honor and remember them.
I vowed last year that it was to be my last marathon. However, given the tragic events last April, this will be a very special and meaningful way to remember the victims, first responders and everyone affected last year. I feel fortunate to be among those who will be running this year.
The Children’s Room is leading nonprofit grief support center in Massachusetts. At The Children’s Room, children, teens, and adults who have experienced the death of a close family member come together to receive support and understanding.
I’ll be running alongside one of my dearest friends, Nanci Gelb, as I have for six marathons. I know what The Children’s Room has done for Nanci and her children, especially her oldest daughter Arielle. I have seen Arielle perform with the Teen Performance Troupe and am so proud of the young woman she has become. I feel honored to be able to give back to the place that has meant so much to Nanci, Arielle, and their family.
The work The Children’s Room does is so meaningful and makes such a difference in the lives of those who have lost loved ones. At each and every TCR event, I am overwhelmed by the warmth and compassion of all who attend, their staff and supporters, and those whose lives have been touched by The Children’s Room.
All of us have experienced loss in our lives. I have lost both my mother and father and many dear friends. Although I was an adult when my parents passed away, I was left with a tremendous void and still miss them every day. I can’t imagine losing a parent earlier in my life, or a child or spouse at any time. Through the kindness of my friends and even strangers, I was able to deal with my losses and channel what I learned to help friends and family who are coping with loss.
What a wonderful gift of hope and compassion The Children’s Room offers to people who have suffered losses. Through support groups, educational programs, and outreach, those who are grieving are comforted with the knowledge that they are not alone. I am so inspired by their work and everyone whose lives they touch.
