I'm taking on this stunt as a way of contributing both personally and challenging our broader CrackBerry and Mobile Nations community to support hurricane relief efforts.
For those who don't know me well, my name is Kevin Michaluk. I'm Co-Founder and COO of Mobile Nations and more affectionately known to most as CrackBerry Kevin - I started CrackBerry.com a decade ago and have been the world's biggest BlackBerry fan and champion ever since (you should check out the new Android-powered BlackBerry KEYone... it's awesome!). I also have a history of doing whacky stuff from time to time, and it's been a while since I've done something CrackBerry Kevin Crazy, so this idea just feels right.
The plan? I just landed in Miami today (September 21st) and I'm going to be working here the next three weeks. Normally while in Miami I tend to indulge - lots of food and lots of booze. As a Canadian living in Winnipeg (COLD WINTERS) coming to Florida always puts me into vacation mode. Somehow flying into Miami today and reflecting on all the hurricane craziness this year transitioning into my default visiting Miami lifestyle just doesn't feel right. So instead, I'm going to do the opposite. For the next three weeks I'm going to fast while here and take all that money I save by not eating or drinking and donate it to hurricane relief efforts. That's $3,000 I'm going to personally pledge. I'll do it safely - following the protocols outlined in The Complete Guide to Fasting. I'll also chronicle the fun for those who have ever wondered what's it like to give up food and exist off 200 calories a day (mainly soup broth and Kombucha) for three weeks.
While I live in Canada, I have a strong relationship with Florida. Over the past decade it's the place I visit the most frequently and spend the most time in when not at home. Mobile Nations is HQ'd out of Florida and we have many people spread out throughout the state. For many years BlackBerry would also hold their annual conference in Orlando every May, which was always the highlight of the year. I have so many good Florida memories.
My Challenge to You or your Company: While I'll be personally donating $3,000 to this campaign, if you have the means to also contribute and haven't yet, please do. The more we raise the more I'm going to make sure I see this thing through to the end (no cheating!). I'd love to raise over $10,000.
Let's do this!!
