THE STORY:

BIODIVERSITY wrote -

Recall the black and white flash of a loon stretching its wings over the still waters of a wilderness lake. Remember their soulful cries piercing the night beyond the light of your campfire. And think about all the good times you shared with friends and family the next day, and many days more, while hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and biking in the great outdoors.

Now imagine a place in New York’s vast Adirondack Park where you can dig deeper into these memories—or create new ones—as you learn how deep a loon can dive, how far they migrate, and what we’re doing to protect and research this magnificent bird. The same place where you can discover just how much there is to see and do across the six-million acre Adirondack Park, and learn about a new endeavor to create a world-class hut-to-hut system that connects Park communities and gives you an even better way to explore the wonders of this area.

Please join us by helping Biodiversity Research Institute’s Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation and Leading E.D.G.E.’s Adirondack Community-based Trails & Lodging System (LE-ACTLS) create a new Adirondack Loon and Trails Center in Saranac Lake, New York!

Our new Adirondack Loon and Trails Center will be housed in the historic Tousley Storage Building at 47 Main Street in Saranac Lake. We are partnering with Madden’s Transfer & Storage and Madden’s Garage Towing & Recovery, the building’s owners, to renovate this distinctive structure, increase its energy efficiency, and convert a portion into our new Center.

Built in 1924, the Tousley Building first served as a car garage and dealership in downtown Saranac Lake, a significant micropolitan center of the Adirondacks. In the 1940s—because Saranac Lake was considered one of the few locations in the Northeast least susceptible to nuclear attack or fallout—the building became a storage facility used for everything from valuable government documents to furs and foreign crown jewels.

With YOUR help, we look forward to adding a new chapter to this building’s impressive history!

Your support will help us purchase much-needed equipment and furniture for our small staff’s office space, displays and inventory to launch a unique gift shop highlighting the work of local Adirondack artisans, and interactive and innovative exhibits for our new environmental education space.

The Adirondack Loon and Trails Center will be an exciting and vital hub for:

  1. Information about the natural and cultural resources of the Park, their conservation, and sustainable recreation;
  2. The Park’s primary resource for loon conservation, outreach, science, and research; and
  3. A new ecotourism initiative linking Adirondack communities, trails, and lodging!

Your generosity will help us create this fun new destination in the very heart of Saranac Lake, the “Capital of the Adirondacks.”

By supporting this joint effort, you can help promote loon conservation and innovative ecotourism in the Adirondack Park at the same time. The new Adirondack Loon and Trails Center will enhance BRI’s Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation’s capacity for scientific research, education and outreach, and loon conservation projects, and better enable LE-ACTLS to bring a spectacular hut-to-hut trail system to the Park. With your help, we can ensure generations to come have the freedom to explore the beauty of the Adirondack Park and the chance to hear the haunting calls of Common Loons on Adirondack waters.

Please join us in making this exciting vision a reality by becoming a Founding Donor of the new Adirondack Loon and Trails Center TODAY! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

We hope you will also visit the new Center on (and after) our opening day on July 2, 2016!

Enjoy exploring our dynamic new Adirondack Loon and Trails Center and find the answers to your questions about loons and recreation opportunities in the Park. While there, visit our one-of-a-kind gift store for that perfect loony gift for the “loon-lover” in your life or a last-minute item for the trail as you head off to explore the Adirondacks.

We look forward to seeing you this summer at 47 Main Street, Saranac Lake, NY!

As a special incentive to our Founding Donors: All supporters of the Adirondack Loon and Trails Center prior to its opening in July, 2016, will be recognized on the Founding Donor Recognition Wall at the Center, with the option to remain anonymous.
