THE STORY:

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is the most commonly inherited peripheral neuropathy, yet most have never heard of this neurological disorder. CMT affects the peripheral nerves which lie outside the brain and spinal chord. As a result, there is profound weakness, loss of muscle tissue and touch sensation in the limbs. People with CMT loose normal function of their arms, legs, hands and feet.

Common Clinical Features:

  • Muscles weakness in legs and feet
  • Loss of muscle bulk in lower limbs
  • Sensory loss in feet
  • Foot Drop (inability to lift feet)
  • Foot deformities (very high arched feet or flat feet)
  • As disease progresses, similar symptoms may be seen in arms and hands

The CMTA is a 501(c)(3) federally recognized charity which provides support to patients and families dealing with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) neuromuscular disease. The CMTA is devoted to:

  • Generating resources to find treatments and a cure for CMT
  • Creating awareness about CMT
  • Improving the quality of life for those affected by CMT
