Help support my Creative Writing Club for middle schoolers. The Hughes Creative Writing Club in Long Beach, CA offers an after school writing program to Hughes Middle School students. I started this club last year as an MSW intern with the School Librarian, Dr. Diane Taylor and I continue to volunteer my time to run the club with my co-leader. Today we serve over 40 club members. These members are encouraged to be creative and write amazing stories, poems, novels, and other word-like activities as well as use their own illustrations to enhance their work. Each semester the members create their own pages that combine into a brilliant Literary Magazine called "(Insert Name Here)". We have printed three editions so far and counting...The members of our club span from students who love to write and read to English Language Learners who are just starting to learn English. The object of the club is to make writing fun and interesting and to encourage kids to use their imaginations to explore their world. Too many children get discouraged from writing because they perceive it as a chore and a hassle. Many other children are so inundated by structured activities that they have forgotten how to get creative. This program encourages creativity and poses writing as a means to expression without limitations.
