Cristina Portillo Torres
It is an excellent plan to go for a walk along the Thamesis arriving to the London Eye and boarding one of the capsules that take you to the top of the Eye offering fantastic views. Cristina Portillo Torres believes that it is even more interesting discovering the gardens situated next to the big Wheel.
In 1951 the Great Britain Festival was celebrated, a big nacional party that started in Southbank. The exhibition showed the history, the landscape and science and was visited by more than 9 million visitors. The city built temporary structure to host the big event and these where situated where the Jubilee Gardens sit nowadays. There is only one building that remains in use, the Royal Festival Hall.
In 1977 the Queen open to the citizens the new landscape to celebrate her Silver Jubilee. Unfortunately in 1990 during the construction of the Jubillee Tube line the gardens were damaged and during 2004 these were rebuilt. The renovation became a space without identity and with a lack of spirit. It was during 2012, within the Queens aniversary events, the architecture Studio West 8 redesigned the area with a beautiful landscape proposal full of colours and completely renovated. The sinous and simple design allows for circulation between the different areas that surround the garden, with space dedicated to a playground.
