BENEFITING: CRISTO REY NEW YORK HIGH SCHOOL
ORGANIZER: CRISTO REY NEW YORK HIGH SCHOOL
I am running the NYC Marathon this year with Team Cristo Rey to raise funds for Cristo Rey New York High School. Please support my run for Cristo Rey by making a donation. Donate a dollar for each mile ran -- a marathon is 26.2 afterall -- as each dollar will directly impact a high school experience! I have pledged and am committed to raising $2,500.
Cristo Rey New York High School is a Catholic, co-ed, college-prep school, part of the national Cristo Rey Network, located on 106th Street in NYC's East Harlem. As you may already know, I am a member of Cristo Rey New York High School's Advisory Committee. From my own experience, and hearing those of current students, I believe in the power of education and am excited to contribute to Cristo Rey and its students in yet another way.
The average family income of a Cristo Rey student is $29,000, which adjusted for New York City living expenses leaves an available income of negative $9,000. Cristo Rey gives these families the opportunity to provide a quality education and better outcomes for their children—98% of Cristo Rey's 770 graduates have enrolled in a four-year college! This includes my alma mater, Georgetown University!
The cost to educate each student is more than five times the amount of the annual tuition of $2,000. The school has not raised tuition since we opened in 2004, and more than 85% of our families receive financial aid. Students earn the majority of the cost of their education by working as part of the Corporate Work Study Program, and parents contribute by paying tuition. However, there is still a significant gap between these contributions and the cost of educating a Cristo Rey student. The funds raised while running the marathon will help us close the gap!
