BENEFITING: CRISTO REY NEW YORK HIGH SCHOOL
ORGANIZER: CRISTO REY NEW YORK HIGH SCHOOL
This fall, I will be running the New York City Marathon on behalf of Cristo Rey New York High School, which provides competitive college-prep education and corporate work-study programs for low-income families in East Harlem. I am so grateful to have been given the gift of a strong and formative education, and am even more grateful that I have the good health and relationships to pay these opportunities forward by supporting Cristo Rey.
The average family income of a Cristo Rey student is $29,000, which adjusted for New York City living expenses leaves an available income of negative $9,000. Cristo Rey gives these families the opportunity to provide a quality education and better outcomes for their children—98% of Cristo Rey's 770 graduates have enrolled in a four-year college, and 99% of the Class of 2017 will be enrolling in four-year colleges this fall. This includes my alma mater, Georgetown University, and my sister’s alma mater, the University of Michigan.
By running the New York City Marathon for Cristo Rey, I have pledged to raise $2,500, all of which will go directly to the cost of educating these students. On top of this, it is my goal to raise an additional $800, for each of the miles I will run in preparation over the next three months.
