The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) is a national non-profit organization dedicated to finding cures for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Over 1.6 million Americans are directly impacted by these debilitating diseases. CCFA exists to fund cutting edge research, provide support services and to overall improve the quality of life of those living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
In November of 2011, my then 15 year old, daughter Marissa went to Children's Hospital of Pittsburrgh with crippling pain in her abdomen. After spending all day in the ER, she was diagnosed as having Crohn's Disease. She spent the next 3 months at Children's as the doctors tried to get her imflammed colon under control. When the highest dose of the strongest medicine would not solve the problem, the decision was made to remove her colon. Her surgery went well and she now lives with an illeostomy bag. Since the surgery, she has been pain and symptom free. However the nasty nature of the disease is such that it could come back and attack anywhere in her G/I tract.
Having to tell my 15 year old that she had to have surgery to remove her colon was one of the toughest days of my life. My hope by doing this fundraising for CCFA is that some day, a cure can be found and no other parents have to have that conversation with their son or daughter. To know that I played some small part in making that happen, will be a great joy.
Please consider making a tax-deductable donation to my fundraising effort. You never know whose dollar will be the dollar that finds a cure.
