BENEFITING: Crohn's & Colitis Foundation
ORGANIZER: Crohn's Colitis Foundation
EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2016
EVENT DATE: May 01, 2016
My best friend was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in the fall of 2014, shortly after she stood beside me on my wedding day as my maid of honor. She has always been the most selfless and generous person and never let anything dim her positive attitude. Her life was completely turned upside down when she had her first flare in May 2015. After two weeklong hospitalization in less than a month, she faced more challenges than most people will face in a lifetime. Fortunately, she wasn't the type of person who let self-pity paralyze her. She decided to make something positive out of her incredibly difficult situation. We started making and selling beautiful crystal necklaces in the color of the IBD ribbon: purple. We have sold over 50 pieces of jewelry and have donated hundreds of dollars to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. My friend has since regained strength and started running and lifting on a regular basis. She convinced me to "run for a reason" in the 2016 Pittsburgh Half Marathon! I am so incredibly proud of her for having the strength and courage to do something as demanding as train for a half marathon. She reminds me on a daily basis that there is really no excuse to not exercise if you are healthy enough to do so. She will be my inspiration to train hard and fundraise harder. We will continue to sell our necklaces to raise money to help cure this devastating illness. I am very honored to run beside her in her first (of many) half marathon.
