I need a cure for my daughter. My daughter has a severe form of Crohn's disease. After only 14 months after her first symptom, she had to have a colectomy.
That first year was a virtual hell for my family. With three kids at home and a husband at work, my youngest ended up sick. For the majority of the year she and I spent it in the hospital. The least little thing sent us running to the hospital.
Treatments are a joke. We still have not find the right "combination" to get her into remission. The first year we went through all the Tier I and II drugs only to fail one of the Tier III drugs. She went from about 135lbs to 70lbs. She went through blood transfusions because she lost so much blood, to tube feedings to TPN (IV feeding) which she developed a blood clot from. Not to mention all the anxiety ridden nights at the hospitals, being woken up constantly by nurses checking vitals. The poking and proding that goes along with hospital visits. Although it doesn't physically hurt her, she also lost most of her hair. Her beautiful hair started falling out in clumps due to disease or medication, not sure exactly which (I think medication) and she ended up cutting it all off. She almost missed almost a year of school, but my trooper didn't let that stop her, with the exception of a foriegn language she took during 8th grade, she made honor roll!
After surgery, with a ostomy bag, things calmed down for a little while. Then we found out she wasn't in remission. It is still there harrassing her. Luckily it is not chronic pain anymore, but symptoms are still there destroying her body.
Once I figured out that the reason they call this an auto-immune disease is because immune suppressors tend to help some people, I started doing a lot of research on the matter. Before I even heard of the MAP bacteria I was talking to my husband about genetics and people who are predisposed to getting sick. That explains why some people fall into the "genetic" category and some do not. Perhaps most people are capable of handling this bacteria while others cannot. Then I learned of the MAP bacteria.
Here is a bacteria that gives a disease to the animals we eat that is has almost identical symptoms. Guess what! There's already a vaccine that WORKS with these animals but it is simply too expensive to vaccinate the herds with them, so they don't. It is transmitted through their poo, which constantly re-infects the herds.
Now break it down some more. Crohn's disease primarily affects 1st world countries. On top of that, most that have it are middle to upper class. Who eats the most meat? Processed foods? Imported foods? There you go. Those are the people getting infected foods!!!!
I am here to ask, beg, and plead for a cure. This vaccine not only will PREVENT future Crohn's disease, but also will CURE those who currently have it. Please, if you have it to give, please give. If you don't feel comfortable going through here to donate, you can also go to http://alumni.kcl.ac.uk/page.aspx?pid=3956 to donate directly.
You have no idea what a cure would mean to my family.
If you look at the pictures, the first "school" picture was a couple of months before her symptoms started. The second was after her surgery and 2 months of steady weight gain.

We are a group of Crohnies whose mission is to raise funds to enable the Crohn's MAP Vaccine developed by Prof. John Hermon-Taylor (King's College London) to commence human trials. This Vaccine is targeted against the bacteria thought to cause Crohn's disease: Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). The vaccine is designed to treat Crohn's disease and has the potential to be a Crohn's cure! The project currently on-going at King's College London will provide a new simple accurate test for MAP in humans for use in the vaccine trial.
We are very grateful to Friends of Kings College London Association Inc for supporting this project.
Crohn's Disease is an aggressive form of inflammatory bowel disease affecting 1.2 million people in the USA. Numbers are increasing, especially in children. Symptoms include chronic abdominal pain, bloody diarrhoea and weight loss. Up to 80% of sufferers will need surgery at some point in their lifetime. There is currently no cure.
We want to help change that. If you are a Crohnie who wants to make a difference then join us -YOUR VACCINE NEEDS YOU!
