After medically redshirting for my entire first year of college, I was finally able to start training and running once again. I ran through shin pain until I was finally diagnosed with exertional compartment syndrome. I underwent surgery on both legs. It was quite a long process to walk again and then undergo physical therapy. Once I was able to, I hit the pool and stationary bike pretty intensely. Eventually I was able to run again - an easy mile under my PT's supervision, but a mile no less! My coach reminded me that after taking so much time off due to injury and surgery it is going to be like I was starting over completely - like I was going into 7th grade cross country all over again. That seemed like a pretty discouraging thought, but I took it as an encouraging one. Maybe a fresh start will be exactly what I needed; then an idea came to my mind that hasn't left since and here we are. I started a type of summer project and it's turning into something more. I have been running with fast and inspirational runners, filming our runs, and posting them on my website. I learned what it was like to go without something that I needed. My appreciation for running only grew when it was taken away. We really do not understand how lucky we are and how much we take what we have for granted. That is why as I get more in depth with the project I would like to start giving back to those who do not have the same luxuries we have - food, water, shelter, medical care, education, etc. Currently, I have teamed up with a few small local businesses and I am working towards more. Brooks Running has donated t-shirts and Young's Screenprinting & Embroidery is printing them right now! I am proud to say that every $25 purchase of a t-shirt will be going 100% to this fundraising goal. Famous marathoners Sara and Ryan Hall created the Hall Steps Foundation. After talking with Sara Hall, I am proud to say I will be running to raise money and awareness for Steps. It was a clear cut charity to support - it involves the word step just like my project, it was created by runners, and it helps those in need. The Hall Steps Foundation is aimed at fighting global poverty and their goal is, "to build a community and provide each member an opportunity to take their own steps toward relieving suffering and helping the poor rise out of poverty." Remember, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step."
