BENEFITING: Cheyenne River Youth Project
EVENT DATE: Sep 15, 2014
The Cheyenne River Youth Project is thrilled to announce that it will build a community art park, the first of its kind, adjacent to the Cokata Wiconi “Center of Life” Teen Center! For many years, the community of Eagle Butte has been negatively affected by vandalism through ‘tagging’. It is a problem in our community and we are all disappointed and saddened by the ongoing defacement of buildings, signage and other property. We hope to address this issue by creating an outdoor safe space that allows for self-expression through both graffiti art and traditional painting. This space will not only benefit those who create within it but also those who choose to come and enjoy the ever changing walls of art produced by talented individuals from our own community. It is our hope that it will also become a source of pride for the town and an attraction to visitors in the area.
While beginning to imagine this initiative we invited a renowned artist to our community to teach our kids the basics of graffiti lettering. While here he also created a mural on the old bowling alley on Main St. The dedication and enthusiasm we saw from our kids during the weeklong workshop and the interest shown from all who saw the mural gave us the confidence to build the park. Graffiti (not tagging) is an art form and with so many kids toying with it already we believe it is time to provide this safe space for them to get outside and hone their skills and develop their artistic practices.
We are currently in the process of building a fence around the property and designing the structures that will serve as canvases for youth. We aim to host a dedication highlighting youth art on September 15, 2014. With the space, creative ideas and the drive to make this park a center for artistic expression and a gathering place for all, we are well on our way to making this dream reality. It is an exciting new venture and we would love for you to be a part of it. Please consider sponsoring a section of the art park by making a tax-deductable donation. Your contribution will be used towards purchasing materials to build the art structures.
On behalf of the children and teens we serve, we sincerely appreciate your support. If you have any questions about the project, please call us at (605)964-8200. Thank you for your consideration.
