As a founding member of the Young Professionals Board of Friends of the Children New York, I have been involved with the organization for more than 5 years. The YP board has provided a unique opportunity to not only raise money to support an amazing organization but to get on the ground and spend time with the staff, mentors and children to really see the amazing things that they accomplish on a day to day basis. As a teacher at a charter school in the South Bronx, I saw first hand the struggles that many children face on a day-to-day basis and how difficult it can be to know how best to help. I heard about FOTC at the right time when I was looking for a good way to get involved with the community after switching careers where I could really trust that every cent was going towards an amazing cause and a completely dedicated staff was helping a community more than I could have imagined. The money raised in this event goes directly to the full time paid mentors in a unique program that serves the most at-risk youth in Harlem and now the Bronx. ESQUIRE magazine recognized FOTC’s unique position as “the country’s first-ever paid mentoring organization” as a “great idea in mentoring” in the magazine’s October 2014 "89 Ways to Change a Life" issue. In addition, the organization received a 4-star ranking from Charity Navigator, the highest overall ranking from America's largest independent charity evaluator.
