Connecticut Support Treatment & Reentry, Inc. (CT STAR)’s mission as a 501(c)(3) organization is to provide and support residential housing, vocational training, rehabilitation and educational opportunities for distressed participants in court-supervised programs serving adults on pre-trial or post-sentence release who have a history of substance abuse.
One of the programs this organization funds is Connecticut District Court’s Support Court Program (“Support Court”). Support Court is a supervised, comprehensive substance abuse treatment program for individuals under federal supervision. Support Court combines efforts of the U.S. District Court, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Federal Defender’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Probation Department, community treatment providers, and community support groups.
CT STAR’s primary goal is to improve the successful rehabilitation and reentry of participants in the Support Court programs by improving opportunities for long-term and stable employment. With funds we raise, we plan to provide financial support in the form of tuition payments for schooling and job training, financial assistance for incidentals important to starting and maintaining employment (clothing, tools of the trade, transportation costs), and assistance with post-incarceration initial housing expenses (rental deposits, housewares, relocation expenses, travel). We will also provide non-monetary support including mentoring, resume writing and interview assistance, and will work with local businesses to encourage the hiring of Support Court participants.
