THE STORY:

Jake Hamburger wrote -

Akwaaba! We're the Ghana Team of Columbia University's student chapter of Engineers Without Borders USA. We've been partners with the village of Obodan in rural Ghana since 2004, working with the local community to find sustainable engineering solutions. In the past we've dealt with exploring new approaches to sanitation, but now our main focus is on improving access to clean water. Obodan sits atop an aquifer filled with renewable and clean drinking water. The problem for many residents, though, is that in order to get at this water they have to walk long distances, pump the water by hand, and then carry it back. This is often a chore for women and young children. All to often, community members draw their water from stagnant pools or other unsanitary sources in order to avoid making these long trips. This presents a real challenge to the ability of Obodan residents to pursue happy, healthy, and productive lives.

Our team has designed a water distribution system that will address this problem in the community. Over the past two years, Columbia engineering students have developed plans for a mechanism that will pump water from one of the village's boreholes to a storage tank on top of a hill. From this tower, gravity will help pipe the water to spigots in convenient locations in Obodan. Access to a convenient and reliable source of clean drinking water will lift the burden of long trips from the lives of many Obodan residents.

We're very excited to go to Ghana this summer to oversee construction of this new project, but we can't do it without you! We need all the help we can get raising funds for construction, which includes parts, transportation, and labor. Every dollar you give brings us closer to our goal of ensuring that every member of the community in Obodan has access to clean water.

Donations can be made by secure credit card payment through the link below:

Since our team uses offline donations to raise money through Crowdrise, we would greatly appreciate it if you send a message to a team member should you choose to contribute to our project. That way, we'll know how we're doing, and we can fully acknowledge your generous support!
