Welcome to the Donation Page for the 2nd Annual CUNY BMI Spring Benefit! Your gift will be used to expand the work of the 31 CUNY BMI projects across the entire CUNY system!
The CUNY Black Male Initiative (CUNY BMI) exists to increase the enrollment, retention and graduation rates of students from severely underrepresented groups in higher education; specifically Black and Latino male students. CUNY BMI is a University-wide initiative that began in 2005, which serves 24 CUNY institutions with over 30 fully-staffed projects that serve 5 divisions of students: Pre-College, Community College, Senior /Comprehensive College, Graduate/Professional Schools or Formerly Incarcerated Re-entry populations.
CUNY BMI has experienced an immense amount of success with our program outcomes for every single project which includes: 1. Diversity Recruitment 2. Culturally Competent Peer to Peer Mentoring 3. Academic Enhancements 4. Institutional Commitment 5. Advisory Committee, and 6. Socioemotional Programming.
CUNY BMI seeks your help in funding to accomplish a few big goals over the next 3 years. First, we want to expand our work to serve over 20,000 students by 2018-2019 school year. We need to hire about 30 additional mentors/year at $1,000/year in order to meet that participation goal. Second, we would like to hire third party program evaluation assistance to assess the effectiveness of CUNY BMI, so that we can get better and then crystallize and replicate what works. That will cost about $20,000. Third, we want to build a partnership with YOU! We hope to generate our own database of contacts and potential donors who are partnered with the work that we do. We feel our work is truly ALL of our work. While Jermaine and Shawn facilitate the process, there are countless project directors, CUNY family, community members and many others who want to improve the academic outcomes for men of color. Amongst the CUNY BMI population we set the bar wanting at least an 85% semester-to-semester retention rate, a 2.9 minimum gpa for all senior college participants and a credit accumulation rate of 12 credits per semester for all of our full-time students. Please join us. We couldn't be happier doing this work, unless you became our partner today.
