BENEFITING: ALS THERAPY DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Nov 07, 2010
Two months ago I started training for the New York City Marathon. At the time, my goal was to qualify for the Boston Marathon. As of three weeks ago, my goals for the marathon & in life have changed drastically. On August 16th my sister-in law Karen - married to my brother Shane for over 17 years - was diagnosed with ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease often become totally paralyzed.
For those of you who have not had the privilege of meeting Karen in person, you are missing out. You will never meet a better mother, wife, sister-in-law, aunt, godmother, daughter or friend! She truly has a heart of gold & is ALWAYS up for an adventure. Of Karen’s many strengths in character, her Faith is of the strongest and has an extremely positive effect. And with your spiritual support we hope to multiply that effect!
As of today, there is no KNOWN cure for ALS; that’s not to say there won’t be a cure tomorrow. By making a donation, big or small, you can help fund critical research for finding a cure! I want to thank you all in advance for your support & prayers for Shane, Karen & Sophie. Please forward on to those that I have missed!
