BENEFITING: Marc Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Foundation
EVENT DATE: Sep 21, 2014
In September, I will be competing in my first Ironman triathlon in Lake Tahoe, CA. It is common for people competing in Ironman triathlons to dedicate their training towards a charity. Recently a close family friend was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. From a medical perspective pancreatic cancer is especially bad since there is no screening, making it difficult to diagnose in early stages, and many patients are middle aged making it especially rough on family. I personally know several individuals who were taken too early due to this awful disease so I have chosen to raise money towards pancreatic cancer research.
Pancreatic cancer is a devastating disease. Althought it accounts for less than 2% of cancers, it is the 4th leading cause of cancer deaths. Despite this terrible statistic, it receives less federal funding than nearly all of the top ten deadliest cancers. The Lustgarten Foundation is dedicated towards advancing scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer. 100% of donations go directly towards cancer research due to a grant by Cablevision, Mark Lustgarten was a former executive, to cover administrative expenses.
