Olivia's Mission

THE STORY:

My daughter Olivia was born with a urea cycle disorder called Citrullinemia. Citrullinemia is a deficiency in an enzyme in the liver that helps detoxify ammonia in the bloodstream. Ammonia comes from the breakdown of protein and is a normal process in the body. The urea cycle enzymes detoxify this ammonia in the blood so that it isn’t harmful, but Olivia’s deficiency causes the ammonia to build up in her blood as a toxin that can harm her tissues and brain. Urea cycle disorders affect about 1 in 14,000 births and often go undiagnosed as autism spectrum or SIDS. Children with urea cycle disorders are at risk for developmental delays and if untreated, coma and death.

She has been chosen as one of ten participants in the country for a new drug calle HPN-100 by Hyperion. She will be seen in a clinic at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, TX monthly for at least two years. She does not like having her blood drawn each month but also understands she is part of history in the making and will hopefully help pave the way for other children with urea cycle disorders.

With what Olivia has endured in her near 8 years of life, and the sacrifice she continues to make, it is my hope that we can honor her sacrifice by raising money and awareness for her cause.
