BENEFITING: Cancer Research Institute, Inc.
My name is Myia Wilkes, I am going into my senior year at SJSU as a student athlete. During my 3 years on the SJSU soccer team, I had the pleasure of meeting two incredible teammates that have inspired me to shave my head for cancer. My first inspiration comes from Stephanie, she was diagnosed with brain cancer during the 2016 soccer season. The team was devastated, we prayed for Stephanie and sent her positive thoughts, however during this time, I felt useless and wanted to do more. Since her initial diagnosis, Stephanie has endured two brain surgeries and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. I have never heard Steph complain or question her situation. Stephanie is conquering her battle with cancer with her effortless drive, determination, and positivity. My second inspiration is my best friend Didi who was age sixteen when her Mother died from Cancer. I met Didi during our freshman year at SJSU, we were both new to the team and the country. I did not have the opportunity to meet Didi’s mom, however I have listened to Didi share her mother’s memory with me. I know she was a loving and energetic mother who inspired her girls to reach their goals and she would be so proud to see the young women Didi and her sister have become. It is my goal that, through shaving my head I have the chance to save just one young person from the life changing experience of being affected by cancer. Stephanie and Didi were both affected by cancer. Stephanie is battling the disease and Didi is growing up without a mother. This is our chance to act and do more than send prayers and positive messages. This our chance to help make a change.
