Currahee Kennels is an organization supported by grants, donations and sponsorship. We breed, raise and train Service Dogs for America's Disabled Veterans. We work with Labrador Retrievers exclusively due to their inherent skills and abilities in providing service to the disabled.
It takes 18 to 24 months to raise and train each service dog. Currahee Kennels can only continue it's work through your assistance. We ask that you give whatever small amount of support you can so those Veterans who have paid a price, and scarified so much, to assure each of us all the freedoms we share as Americans.
Service dogs are; sight for the blind, hearing for the deaf, mobility for the severely physically disabled, love, comfort and friendship to those who suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). With PTSD and TBI the scares and damage are all on the inside and ravage the mind. For Vietnam era Veterans exposed to Agent Orange our Labs become a 24/7 blood monitor for diabetics (Vietnam Vets exposed to Agent Orange often contract a severe case of diabetes milites, which can bring with it blindness, nerve damage and many other complications.
Labrador Retrievers are especially suited for this type service. They love humans and only really enjoy life when given responsibility and purpose. A Labrador's attention to detail, dedication to purpose and loyalty to their ward is unsurpassed by any other breed of dog. The care and attention they provide comes with a love that lasts a life time. Currahee Kennels raises and trains Labs for the purpose of bringing Disabled American Veterans a life time friend. A friend who provides them with love and the special attention each Veteran needs to continue on with life unencumbered by their disability. Our Labs are "Tasked Trained" to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and therefore are, by law, allowed to accompany their Veterans
Our name "Currahee" comes from the Georgia mountain encampment which trained the famous 506th Airborne Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, the original "Band of Brothers". The 506th acquired the name from Currahee Mountain Georgia, located north of Atlanta where the famous 506th ran "three miles up and three miles down". "Currahee" a Cherokee word meaning "We Stand Alone Together". Our Labs share that same dedication, they proudly "Stand Alone" to make the lives of each Veteran entrusted to there care fulfilled and unimpeded.
At Currahee Kennels our mission is to provide the highest quality Labradors with the best possible training and equipment to our Disabled Veterans at no charge. This is why we need your help, each Labrador costs in excess of $25,000. As a service related disabled veteran from Vietnam I know the hardship of life while living on a Veterans Administration pension. Your donation will help further our cause in growing Currahee Kennels so that we can provide forty Labradors each year. Please help us help a Vet, they stood alone for you, will you stand for them now? Currahee!
