BENEFITING: PIRATES CHARITIES
EVENT DATE: May 04, 2014
As a native Pennsylvanian, lifetime Pittsburgh Pirates fan and avid runner, I knew this was the charity where I wanted to put my time and effort into for 2014 and run the Pittsburgh Half Marathon. I've been a fan of the Pirates since I was young. Devasted in 1992 when the Braves won the NLCS, I remained a loyal Pirates fan for 21 losing seasons. But how much fun was 2013!! The Pirates are back!
This race will be my 21st half marathon in 3 1/2 years. I thought that this is appropriate since Roberto Clemente was number 21.
Why do I think this is a worthwhile charity? Because it's mostly for kids. Pirates Charities create places for kids to play, such as baseball and softball fields, but more importantly, they provide them education for they youth on health and nutrition.
Honestly, childhood obesity today scares me. There are too many children in America that are overweight. You can blame fast food, video games, television, prepackaged meals, etc, but in reality, we need to EDUCATE the youth. Obese children most likely will be obese adults. There are so many health issues associated with obesity - heart disease, cancer, diabetes. We need to teach the youth to be healthy now, so they are healthy adults and healty for life. It's a lifestyle, people.
The mission statement for Pirates Charities says it all "Pirates Charities is committed to strengthening the community by supporting organizations and programs aimed at improving the lives of children and adults in the greater Pittsburgh region. Pirates Charities places a special emphasis on supporting youth programs focused on health, fitness, and education by developing partnerships with those who share in our mission."
