Bryan J. Nichols that was killed in Afghanistan 6 August 2011. He was the United States Army pilot of the Chinook that was shot down carrying members of the Extortion 17 special operations unit, the same (Seal Team Six) that brought down Bin Laden. This is an event that sent a shock wave worldwide and changed military operations as we know it and the single largest US military loss of life event since World War II. Bryan had two combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as well as a tour to Qatar and Kosovo.
Bryan has been honored in many ways since his death. His hometown of Hays, KS just recently named the interchange of US 183 and I-70 the Bryan J Nichols Fallen Veterans Memorial Interchange. At his funeral, he was escorted by hundreds of patriot riders and there were tens of thousands of people in attendance. He was buried as a highly decorated military officer receiving the purple heart, bronze star, combat action badge and Meritorious Service Medal, just to name a few, among many other military awards. Next month, he will be honored with a mass burial in Arlington National Cemetery with the other members of Extortion 17.
