Crossway Water for Life (CWFL) is a separate ministry within the global ministries of Crossway International (see www.gocrossway.org for more information). CWFL was established in 2010, beginning in Kenya, for the purpose of drilling water wells and providing proper sanitation for some of the most water-starved areas of East Africa. During 2010 we received significant donations which allowed us to purchase a well drilling rig, tow vehicle and additional equipment - and ship it to Mombasa, Kenya. There we received the equipment and proceeded to drill a water well in a remote area about 50 km south of Mombasa. We have now moved the rig to the Nairobi area where we are hope to drill at least 1 well/month, depending on the level of giving of our many current and growing partners. One of the intents of the ministry is to equip local Kenyan's with the training and equipment to perform the drilling operation, thereby freeing them from the endless cycle of living off of outside donations. To that end we have employed a local business manager and drilling foreman, who will hire their own drill team and laborers. As the program progresses we intend to purchase additional drill rigs and hire more locals, with the long range intent of spreading to other East African countries, including Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan. Based on our experience in drilling 7 wells in four different East African countries, we have estimated the cost of each well, including pump and storage tank, at $8,000. We will also train members of the receiving community in propser health and hygiene practices and in the long term maintenance of the system. We will provide them with some initial spare (wear) parts so that their system will be sustainable for the extended future.
