Place, Service, Sustainable Communities

Community Works Institute (CWI) We work in partnership with K-16 and community based educators to change the lives of young people across the U.S. and around the world. We do  this through our internationally acclaimed Institutes on Service-Learning and Sustainability and local site based support for schools and teachers. Our print, web based resources, and our digital magazine Community Works Journal provide teachers with ideas and inspiration, contributed by other educators. CWI actively supports and brings together educators and students  involved in social, economic, and cultural projects with long-term impact.

We develop, promote, and support programs and  curriculum that uses place as the context, service-learning as the strategy, and sustainability as the goal. CWI helps teachers connect students to their local place through academically based service experiences that result in deeply engaging learning, new understanding and  relationships. Students learn that they can make a difference as citizens, now and in the future. In the process, students develop a sense of the importance and value of the place that they call home.

“Transformative work during the week. I will use this process and knowledge to change how our school gets students involved in their community. I found myself becoming even more determined about the role that service-learning can have in our school. CWI's faculty were really tuned into the group’s mastery of the concepts. Thank you for taking a leadership role!”
Vernita Vallez, Principal
Inter-American Magnet School, Chicago, Illinois

Since 1995 CWI has actively supported thousands of educators and schools around the world, providing training and deeply collaborative professional development experiences at local site based trainings across the U.S. and around the world., along with CWI's Summer Institutes on Service-Learning and Sustainability, held each year in Los Angeles and Vermont.

“Great opportunity to connect to other professionals and very helpful in forming a clear vision of accomplishments through service-learning. The most significant  piece was being able to figure out a vision for a whole school program.”
