THE STORY:

In early 2014 I thought I was just a normal 24 year old. I was married, we were on an adventure living in a new place, we had a new puppy, everything was great. One day I was on the treadmill at the gym and noticed some swelling in my left leg. I said to myself "self, you're working out, pumping blood to your legs..that's why it's swollen" I ignored it for the next few weeks figuring it was just my body's response to a new exercise routine. My mom came up to visit one day and I told her about it and she encouraged me to call the doctor, so I did. They took me in immediately, and upon glancing at my leg they thought it could be a blood clot. They sent me down for an ultrasound of my leg and it confirmed their thoughts: there were blood clots in my leg. Luckily they were superficial and weren't considered dangerous but hey were concerned with the situation because of my age and the fact that they seemed to show up out of the blue so they sent me for a bunch of blood work to test for mutations and sure enough, one came back positive. I have a mutation called Factor V Leiden which means I have a higher risk of clotting than someone without the mutation (for the sake of a long winded explanation we'll leave it at that :) ) The doctors put me on blood thinners for about 6 months, and after many trips to my cardiologist where things didn't quite seem right to me, he sent me for an MRI which confirmed I had DVTs in both of my legs, not just small, less dangerous superficial clots in one leg. The day my doctor called me and gave me the results of the MRI, I just sat in bed and cried. I was tired of getting stuck in the stomach each night with my medicine. I was tired of going to the doctor. I was tired of it all. And all of this came from a little swelling I noticed in my leg one day on the treadmill. I'm now just shy of 27..going on the third year of the rest of my life living with this. The Factor V Leiden will never go away, I will always have that and will forever have that elevated risk of clotting again. Luckily, it was all caught early, and I'm able to monitor things and I know when something isn't right. Not everyone who experiences DVTs, Factor V Leiden or any of the other risk factors are that lucky. DVTs can travel to the lungs causing potentially life-threatening pulmonary embolisms (or clots in the lungs). An average of 274 people die every day from blood clots, young and old. Blood clots don't discriminate against age, they can happen to anyone, young or old. I'm joining Cycle to Stop the Clot to help Stop the Clot raise awareness about blood clots, thrombotic disease and thrombophilias, and to raise funds for the National Blood Clot Alliance so they can continue their support, education and advocacy programs for patients stricken with blood clots. Thank you!!! -Ashley
