THE STORY:

D.A. BLODGETT - St. John's wrote -

D.A. Blodgett-St. John’s is the oldest children’s services agency in West Michigan.  At its inception, the agency offered food and shelter to children orphaned by disease epidemics of the late 19th century.  Today, D.A. Blodgett-St. John’s provides services to deal with the effects of the modern epidemic of child abuse and neglect by strengthening at risk families, providing safe places to heal, providing foster and adoptive homes and helping kids thrive.

Many of the children served by D.A. Blodgett-St. John’s are victims of abuse and neglect.  Make no mistake about it—these experiences have left them scarred and traumatized.  It is important for them to address these painful experiences through counseling. We also know it is crucial for them to understand they are much more than what happened to them.  In short, we do not believe that traumatic experiences should define them. Rather, they should be defined by their natural abilities and potential.  So, while it is important to address past painful experiences in therapy, these children also need to begin to explore their own interests and abilities.

We accomplish this by providing a full array of enriching experiences for children. This includes activities such as summer camps, music and art lessons, field trips to museums, hiking and biking trips, sports teams, dance lessons and much more.  These are life-changing experiences for these children—many of whom have rarely been out of their neighborhoods, let alone to the Natural History Museum in Chicago, a play at the Grand Rapids Civic Theater, or Michigan Adventure.
