THE STORY:

Andrew Werner wrote -

“DailySex for 62 Limes”, AKA “Dyslexia for 26 Miles” – get it?

If you know me and have ever had the privilege of hearing me read out loud or received an e-mail from me and had it read something along the lines of “let know me if…” you probably didn’t think much of it. However, I thought about it a lot. I have thought about and struggled with reading every day since I can remember. Luckily, I have been surrounded by a support system that taught me different ways to think about reading rather than just to think about that the crippling feeling that consumed me for a long time.

However, most people aren’t given the kind of opportunities I received. They grow up only knowing that crippling feeling. DailySex for 62 Limes is my tiny effort to help as many young people, struggling with dyslexia as possible.

We all know that there are endless worthy cause in the world, so instead of explaining why you should choose to help with this one in particular, let me tell you a story of one especially sweaty kid:

Try to remember back to your fifth or sixth grade classroom. Now think of a book you read, maybe it is, Of Mice and Men. Now, think of a teacher, the one that always wanted to have to class read out loud. Maybe she asked for volunteers, maybe she just called on students randomly. Today the teacher is nice enough to go around the room switching readers after every paragraph. Harmless enough, maybe to you this even seems like a fond memory of school. You’re listening, enjoying the story and even learning.

For someone who is dyslexic or a “slow reader” it is hell. The only saving grace is that at least today you have a chance; she is going around the room. So you start counting paragraphs, frantically trying to determine which paragraph may fall to you. You are wondering if that tiny paragraph, six paragraphs away will count as one or two? Will she let you break apart the paragraph that goes a full page? Now the reader is three seats down from you.; you are sweating as you vigorously read the paragraph that you think may be yours. You can feel your face turning red, sweat on your brow. Two away, do you go to the bathroom? One away, “Can you read the next paragraph out loud?” Train wreck.

For students with dyslexia, it is not pretty, but with a little extra attention, it can be a little better and a lot less sweaty.

On November 11th 2012 I will be getting very sweaty running the Richmond City Marathon. My hope is to raise enough money to make a large donation to a children’s afterschool program in Portsmouth, NH at a program called New Heights Adventure for Teens.  It is a place I worked for several years, and it is an amazing enviroment for young teens.
