To my closest friends and family,
Check out my blog entry here: http://bit.ly/1N4zxIt
If you have spent any time with me at all, you know how passionate I am about the Girls on the Run Saint Louis Mission .....
Over the course of the next few months I will be undertaking a huge challenge – the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. It is 26.2 miles and going to be tough but that’s the point! You might be wondering, why do this to myself?
They are a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) life-changing, after-school program for girls in 3rd-8th grade.
Simply put, the program transforms the way girls see themselves and their opportunities. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment, while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. The mission is achieved by volunteer coaches who meet with the girls as a team twice per week for 12 weeks as they complete the curriculum which creatively integrates running, goal-setting and training for a 5k with lessons about developing confidence, respect and healthy living.
When girls participate in this program they exhibit improved self-esteem, body size satisfaction, and physical activity behaviors to a statistically significant extent. Girls also show positive changes regarding attitudes towards physical activity, healthy behaviors, and empowerment.
So, to answer my question, I’m doing this for so many reasons…
I’m running this marathon for:
- The over 3,000 girls throughout Saint Louis in 3rd-8th grade who will cross their own finish line this year - and the 10,000 who already have - learn how to stand up for themselves and others, have difficult conversations, make healthy choices and grow up strong because of Girls on the Run-Saint Louis.
- The over 600 coaches who are volunteering their time and bringing the Girls on the Run mission to life at over 200 schools
- Every girl who will participate at a Girls on the Run program in the future regardless of her family's financial situation.
I strongly believe that every girl should have the opportunity to grow up strong, healthy and confident, which is why it is GOTR promise to never turn away a girl from their program because of her inability to pay the program fee.
Approximately 85% of girls request and receive financial assistance to participate.
To help them keep their promise, I have made a commitment to raise $1,000 as I train for my race! All funds raised will go to underwrite scholarship funds so that every girl has the chance to learn that she can do anything she sets her mind to.
