I've been singing with the Boston Gay Men's Chorus since 2001 - In my time with the chorus, I have not only seen history made, but I've been able to be a part of making that history. Some of that history includes being the first gay chorus: to sing at the first legal same-sex wedding in the country, to be the first to perform at a high school to support Gay-Straight Alliances, to tour and perform in the Middle East as an openly gay chorus, to be the first gay chorus to be invited by a Catholic college - College of the Holy Cross to perform a concert following that tour, to be the first gay chorus to perform at the inaugural celebration of a Republican (!) governor and so much more.
Through the chorus, I have met celebrities, politicians and ambassadors. I've performed for and with TV and Broadway stars. I have sung in some of the most beautiful and legendary performance halls. We sang like rock stars in front of 700,000 people in Berlin and under protest and armed guards in Poland and Turkey. Most of all, I've been able to witness firsthand the ability of the power of music to change hearts and minds and make a kinder, fairer world. It doesn't happen right away, but we plant the seeds and start the dialogue. A few years after that protested concert in Poland, an openly gay man there was elected to public office for the first time and a year after our concert in Turkey, their first LGBT chorus was formed there.
Fifteen seasons and I still look forward to the start of each season like a kid on the first day of school. New music, get to see my friends I haven't seen all summer and getting to make new ones. It's very exciting but the MOST exciting thing is having more opportunities to make a difference. This summer, the BGMC will travel to South Africa to do that. We'll share our stories about our lives through music and promote the ideal that we all have more in common than differences. We will be partnering with an LGBT refugee organization and one of the largest HIV/AIDS clinics in Africa to help support the work they do. We will join a fledgling chorus in concert and attend a town's first Pride celebration. We will also have ample opportunities to experience the local culture and customs and hear their stories as well. It is a tremendous opportunity and a wonderful experience.
BGMC is a non-profit volunteer organization. In order to take the trip, each member will have to raise funds to pay their own way to get there. I'm asking for your help to support this trip. If you've been to one of our performances, you know what that experience could mean to someone hearing it for the first time. I'm asking you to support that and support me in that mission. Please consider making a tax deductible donation to the chorus through this site to support the trip, my participation and the work the chorus will do on it.
Thank you for reading through this and for all your love and support!
