THE STORY:

Next month, along with my dance friends, I will participate in an dance-a-thon to help raise money in the fight against childhood cancer. Please read on to understand more about this imporant cause and why I want to be a "dancer smashing cancer" on May 31st.

Ashburn Academy of Dance will be holding its annual Dance-a-Thon on Saturday, May 31, 2014 from 1 PM to 4:30 PM. This year, the proceeds from our fundraising efforts will be going to the Smashing Walnuts Foundation (a component fund of the Piedmont Community Foundation). Gabriella Miller, a former Ashburn Academy student, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor the size of a walnut when she was 9 years old. Her family started smashing walnuts every day to symbolize the smashing of her tumor. Gabriella, together with her family, created Smashing Walnuts, a non-profit designed to raise awareness of childhood cancer, with a goal of raising funds to go to childhood brain tumor research that will lead to better understanding and treatments of these tumors. Sadly, Gabriella lost her fight against brain cancer last October at just ten years old. Her family continues the foundation in her memory and her honor with mission that the funds raised by Smashing Walnuts will help find a cure for cancer so that no other children and families suffer the way that Gabriella and the Millers have. To learn more facts about childhood brain tumors as well as the origin of the foundation, please visit www.smashingwalnuts.org.
