EVENT DATE: Oct 05, 2017
On February 13, 2016, just months after giving birth to my twins, I found out that I have a higher risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer because I carry the gene that makes it almost a certainty that in the future I will. While I was not diagnosed with cancer, I found out that I was BRACA1+.
Having watched my mom go through breast cancer, twice, and my grandma pass away from ovarian cancer, for me, the next step was something that I had to do to survive. It was clear that cancer was coming for me next and I was not going to let it affect my family’s life, if I could help it. I didn’t even give it a second thought. I was going to do whatever preventative measures I could to lessen the chance that this devastating disease, would ever affect my generation. And although I always thought in the back of my mind I may carry the gene, the day I heard the results I was fortunate to have my husband by my side, because I didn’t realize how impactful that test really was going to be on our future.
I spent the next year, plus (I am still undergoing surgery) doing whatever preventative measures I could. I had both a double mastectomy and an oophorectomy. While some people say I’m brave or strong for going through all that I am going through, I just look at it like I’m lucky I took the steps I did to fight off cancer before it fought me.
When I received the call to inquire whether or not I wanted to participate in the Pink Fund’s “Dancing with the Survivors” I instantly agreed. I was beyond flattered and I thought what a great way to educate people about getting tested and how it can change your life for the better. Not to mention, I was willing and eager to do whatever I could to assist those around me who have breast cancer and are in need of assistance through this tough time. I am dancing in the “Dancing with the Survivors” fundraiser, October 5th, and raising money for this great cause.
But I need your help. The way you can help is by donating here to help support breast cancer patients currently in active treatment so they can focus on healing, raising their families, and returning to the workplace. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and help me in the fight against cancer!
