Dancing Headlong Into Arts Education: Christina's HPI Fund

For the past two years, I've been teaching theatre workshops to Philadelphia High School students through the Greenfield Teaching Artist Fellowship.

Through our workshops, I've been privileged to see confidence blossom in the most reticent students. After our "Theatre in 60 Minutes" workshop, one of my students told me after class, with a shocked smile, "I felt so smart!" I've worked in challenging classrooms, with disinterested students, and I've learned the surprising advantages of clowning around the classroom.

Before the fellowship, I didn't know what a teaching artist was and I had no clue how to live a sustainable life as an artist. The Greenfield Fellowship gave me marketable and transferrable skills that will serve me well as an actor, educator, leader, reformer, and the yet-unknown-opportunities before me.

Moving forward, I'm brushing up my performance skills and enrolling at HPI. In this intensive semester I'll be learning and practicing dramaturgy, clowning (Lecoq), mask work (Commedia dell'Arte), and collaborating with other artists in performance. HPI students also benefit from professional mentoring and earn a full semester of 300-level undergraduate credit through Bryn Mawr College.

After class, I will be working part-time to pay tuition and support myself. Time and money! Any and all support is appreciated ($5, $20, prayers, casseroles). Your support not only relieves some of my financial stress, but it builds interest in the performing arts. So tweet that! HPI sounds curious, right?
