SAS HLS Dan Cain
Saint Petersburg, FL United States
CROWDRISING SINCE: Apr 08, 2015
Stuff About Me:

The SAS Health & Life Sciences (HLS) division strives to assist the HLS  industry to bring to market meaningful medicine with world class analytic software & services. For the  past 3 years, the SAS HLS division supported and participated in the JDRF One Walk to raise money for research and clinical trials for type 1 diabetes treatments and ultimately a cure.

I was connected to JDRF through Suzanne and Heath Clayton (both of whom work at SAS) whose son has had T1D since he was 20 months old. He just passed his 5 year anniversary of having type 1 diabetes. He struggles with diabetes everyday having to do multiple finger pricks to check his blood sugar and has to be given insulin for every piece of food he eats. Chance wears an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor 24/7 to keep him alive and safe until a cure for diabetes is found. He didn’t deserve diabetes, but is now just another gadget kid with a great attitude that does what he needs to do to stay healthy and alive.

As the leader of SAS' HLS division, I had an opportunity to meet Michael Weintraub, President & CEO of Optum/United Healthcare subsidary & New England Chapter BOD for JDRF  through our HLS industry connections. I share Michael's deep passion to find a cure  As a former Boston Marathon finisher we quickly connected around his son, Greg, who is running his second Boston Marathon on April 20, 2015 to raise money for the Joslin Diabetes Center’s. Greg has type 1. Facing cold weather, high winds and hilly conditions, I struggled to complete this very tough marathon course without and complications from diabetes.  Inspired by Greg's bravery and determination to tackle this event as a type 1 diabetic, please join all of us to help raise funds in search of a cure.

The Joslin Diabetes Center’s mission is to prevent, treat and cure diabetes. This aligns precisely with JDRF's mission is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its complications through the support of research. In fact, a huge advancement was announced by Doug Melton, a Harvard Scientist affiliated with the Joslin Diabetes Center and funded by JDRF, who has two type 1 diabetic children, that after 23 years of research discovered how to create large quantities of mature insulin producing cells from stem cells ( http://hsci.harvard.edu/news/stem-cells-billions-human-insulin-producing-cells ). This is an ENORMOUS step toward to discovering a better treatment and possible cure for diabetes.

Please help me support the Joslin Diabetes Center:  Greg Weintraub and Chance Clayton and the estimated 3 million American children and adults affected by this terrible disease by donating at this link today:https://www.crowdrise.com/danielcain
