Erin, Liam, and I are involved in again this year in an Autism Fundraiser which honors children like Liam. The 11th Annual Edge of Autism Walk and Festival and will be held on Saturday, May 5th. We are excited this year event will be the day after Liam’s 9th Birthday. We can’t wait to celebrate Liam’s birthday with our family, friends and our Tommy Foundation family. This will be the 7th year that we have been actively involved and participating in the Edge of Autism Walk. Over 1000 local community members attended this event last year and made it the largest Autism event in Lancaster County. We have created a Fundraiser Page named Liam’s Superheroes. Liam is our superhero and all our supporters are superheroes to us too. Our Superhero Supporters are the best ever. We won for Top Fundraiser for the last three years in a row, so we would love to make it FOUR YEARS IN A ROW!!!! This is the BEST way we know how to honor Liam’s success.
1 in 68 children have been diagnosed with Autism. We can’t believe it, but it has been six years since Liam was diagnosed with Autism. Liam’s Autism diagnosis changed our lives forever. We cried a lot of tears and lost a lot dreams, when Liam was diagnosed. Now we are on the other side of this Autism journey. We have all new dreams for Liam and we are excited about his future. Liam is an incredible young boy. Liam is now in the Third Grade at Brecknock Elementary School in their Autistic Support Classroom. Liam is continually meeting his IEP, Individual Education Plan, goals at school. He is mainstreamed in the Third Grade daily with for his specials. These children love Liam. They fight over who will be is buddy in the classroom for that day. His teacher and aids always tell me how much he is loved at school. His vocabulary is growing and his use of sign language is still increasing immensely J He can say some small sentences now. He can say his evening prayers now including the Sign of the Cross all by himself. He can read some books now too. One of Liam’s favorite things still to do is spell words with his magnetic letters and this helps him better communicate with us. He can now tell us so many things that he wants to do. His progress is just incredible!!! Liam’s years of swim lessons have finally paid off. He is can swim multiple laps in the pool now and is able to float on his back at ease. This will help him to survive, if he was in a water accident. Accidental drowning is the leading cause of death for children/adults with Autism. Liam still loves Thomas the Train and we get a summer membership at the Strasbourg Railroad. He likes to play Batman Lego and Snoopy video games. Being outside is still on the top of his list of fun activities to do. From playing ball, being on his play yard, to shoveling snow, outside is where Liam loves to be. Liam loves going to Longwood Gardens and of course Disney World. Liam astonishes us every single day with his progress.
We love being involved with the Tommy Foundation. We loved walking for the past years with our family and friends in support of our Superhero Liam. The Tommy Foundation has helped our family immensely. This organization has assisted over 120 Autism families in the Lancaster County, PA area. Over 3000 individuals have attended the Tommy Foundations sponsored events. We have used some of the various services, programs, and events that the Tommy Foundation has offered to families dealing with Autism. We have been involved with mini Autism Conferences, monthly support meetings, training classes, Sensitive Santa, fun activities for our children of all ages, and other social interactive events. The fundraising dollars that we will be raising goes directly to these programs that the Tommy Foundation offers free of charge or for a very small charge to the community. The Tommy Foundation helps spread Awareness, Action, and Acceptance in the Lancaster Community and beyond.
Please think about supporting a great organization that not only supports Liam directly, but also so many children like Liam in the Lancaster, PA area. Liam’s Superheroes has raised $10,086.00 in the last three years. SKY’S THE LIMIT!!!
