BENEFITING: PHILADELPHIA RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE INC
EVENT DATE: Jun 12, 2016
I am turning 30! Yup, 30! This is coming from the girl who still "treats" herself with a box of Lemonheads from the local bodega and plays Polly Pockets with her niece. Trust me, 30 is a pretty big deal! With that said, I wanted to celebrate this milestone with something special this year.
I have been volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House on Chestnut Street for 4 years now. Located at 3925 Chestnut Street, the House currently sleeps 45 families with most of the children being treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Working at the front desk, I have had the opportunity to meet the most amazing, compassionate, strong, generous, and loving families from across the world. These families are in the midst of life's largest uphill battles. Whether it be chemotherapy, waiting on a transplant list, a high-risk pregnancy, or a tragic accident, these families join together every evening to share a meal, words of support, and perhaps even a hug. It is from these families that I have gained my greatest appreciation for life and the beauty of sharing the journey with others.
So, here is my birthday wish: share my 30th year with 30 families.
To do so, I need your help!
The House asks families to pay $15/night for their stay. If unable to afford this, families are never turned away. Donations raised allow them to extend the same services, support, and hospitality to all families. This place has taught me that miracles are possible, love wins every battle, and sometimes the smallest gestures of kindness echo the loudest. I have spent the majority of my Friday evenings watching extremely sick children fight their way into remission, held hands with Spiderman as we trick-or-treated our way throughout the house, and helped children select the best gifts from our Welcome Wagon as I checked their family into the house.
Rather than presents or a night out on the town this year, I ask all of my family, friends, co-workers, and classmates to consider picking up a $15 tab for one of the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House on my 30th Birthday, June 12th. I also plan to drop off cake and water ice for the families to enjoy after dinner on my birthday.
If you prefer to mail in a check directly to the house, please let me know. I would love to count your donation with the totals! For more information on the house and the amazing work they do, please see their website: http://www.philarmh.org/.
I hope you can help me ring in this next decade - 30, flirty, and thriving!
