THE STORY:

I walk to honor and to help others who experience the death of a child. I also walk for the "Forgotten" children, those who've been murdered, left abandoned after death, and simply forgotten. I sit sometimes and just say out loud the names of all the children on the back of my shirt who I have had the pleasure of remembering and walking in honor of. It's funny how I have never met any of them and yet how they have all impacted my life for the past 11 years in such a profound manner.Well this year is a little different and personal for me. I will be walking in honor of Seth Leifker. For those who don't know I'm a clinical social worker on the mother child wards at Madigan Army Medical Center, which means I have the pleasure of meeting, and supporting so many families whose infant or child is extremely ill. Seth was born with Trisomy 18 (severe genetic disorder associated with intellectual disability and abnormalities in many organs. Only 10% of affected infants survive past one year of age, and half of affected infants do not live beyond the first week of life. Seth had a lot of other compounding medical issues; therefore, right from birth he was not expected to live but for hours maybe days. Fortunately, God had different plans for this little person and not only did he live past delivery, he also left the NICU and numerous hospital stays. Seth's zest for life, huge personality, big eyes, tiny grin and adorable kitten cry touched so many lives that people came from everywhere to interact with him. I absolutely fell in love with this little guy and treasured every moment in which I got to not only interact with him, but his amazing family. I learned so much about faith, love and appreciating every minute given to us to love and support one another. It is heart breaking to know he was born with a terminal illness, but his life was bigger than his death because of how many people he impacted in his short 7 months on earth. I feel I'm a better social worker and person because I had the pleasure of watching him interact with people with out ever saying a word and exploring his surroundings without ever crawling. Seth slept with his eyes open and I believe it was because he never wanted to miss anything or anyone around him.On April 14th Good Friday Seth was admitted to the pediatric ward as his little body was slowly shutting down. I was present when he took his last breathe which by all accounts was so peaceful as GOD brought him home. I remember helping take all the tubes and tape off of him, which for the past 7 months has been his norm. He looked like a sleeping baby no longer struggling to breathe or in pain. The moment that will stay with me for the rest of my life is when the mother wrapped him in a blanket, hugged him with all her might, told him she loved him with every ounce of her being and she was going to miss him everyday for the rest of her life as she walked over to me,handed him to me and asked me to take care of her son while she left the hospital for the last time. I cannot put into words or ever describe the honor it was to hold, rock and watch over this precious baby as his family said good bye and left out of the room. It is the most humbling experience to have a family call you family and entrust you with the most important thing in their life. I want them to know I took care of him as asked, I loved him and ensured he was not alone. Thank you Jenette and Scott for allowing me to be part of this journey with you it has been a pleasure and honor. I will also be walking on behalf of two of my co-worker who lost their infants to soon Jayne Thyren and Evan Powell, you both are missed terrible and it will also be an honor to remember you today and always. There are over 1,200 babies (stillborn up to one year old) who die in Washington State each year. And TEARS is THE ONLY RESOURCE available to these families to help with financial funeral assistance and ongoing emotional support. No family plans to bury their child. TEARS supports families through infant loss, as well as tragic child death (kids from 1 year to 12 years) who die from a homicide or accident. This is a non- profit organization that helps family's with their financial burden that comes with the unexpected loss of an infant, grief and loss counseling and sibling support groups. The sadness and hurt that a parent feels when they have lost a child is unimaginable and there are no words to express that ongoing pain that they carry in their heart. If you are like me and could not imagine for one second not having your child, niece, nephew or grandchild here on earth then please take a moment and help someone who has experienced that loss. Please help me reach my goal I cannot do it alone. Thank you

Please forward to anyone who you think might want to support me
