On a Sunday afternoon last year, wearing their Bay to Breakers t-shirts, the girls lined up at the starting line to run 28 laps (the 12K distance of the Bay to Breakers) and raise money for their own education. They took off on the 400-metre track, supported by each other, the teachers, the Daraja staff, and the volunteers. Participating in this race is empowering for the girls and allows them to experience the excitement that the 250+ runners feel around the world as they run for Daraja Academy!
The Lap-a-thon will take place again this year and the girls couldn’t be more excited! Some will begin with shoes on their feet, and others will tire of these ‘heavy’ objects and run the race barefoot. As the girls become tired, they join in unity and run hand-in-hand to the finish line. Lisayo, Form 4, won the race last year, but we have a new Freshman class and who knows who might shine!
Daraja Academy has ignited the dreams of 130 extraordinary Kenyan girls due to the generous support of people just like you. Your gift today will allow us to accept another 26 talented and hopeful girls in 2014 and encourage them to reach for the stars!
Daraja Academy is a boarding secondary school for Kenyan girls with top academic scores and exceptional leadership skills but no means to continue their education. The academy provides shelter, food, healthcare and counseling services which allows students to focus on their academic and personal potential, without being hindered by the everyday barriers of poverty.
