This summer, 14 fellow Marin Academy students and I will be embarking upon a three-week trip to the Daraja Academy of Kenya ( Daraja Academy provides full 4-year scholarships to bright but impoverished Kenyan girls that would otherwise be unable to access a secondary education. During our stay, we will teach computer and photography classes and participate in projects to make the campus more environmentally sustainable. We will also attend classes in Swahili, African History, and Geography.

I have been moved and humbled by the stories of the hardships these girls have had to overcome just to access a high school education. I want to do something that will make a difference for them. I see no reason why I am more deserving than these girls of the high school education I take for granted, and I believe that having the means to "be the change" constitutes an obligation to do so.

On May 15th I will join 77 people running the 100th Annual Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco as part of the Daraja Race for 77 Team.  Each of us has committed to find a minimum of 10 people to sponsor us in this race and I am hoping you will consider being one of my sponsors.

Our team has added a unique aspect to the race this year. Ten thousand miles away on the Daraja campus -- on the very same day -- all 77 students from Daraja Academy will run their very own Bay to Breakers and work to solicit sponsors through our Facebook page. I am partnering with Monicah Wadjiru (on the far right in the photo), a junior at Daraja.

Monicah missed her initial admissions interview at Daraja. The administration contacted her family, and found that they hadn't been able to afford the transportation cost (less than $3) to send her to her interview. Instead, they sent 14 year old Monicah to a distant uncle's house to work as "house help" (housekeeper). The Daraja administration offered to pay for the transportation. Once Monicah arrived, she impressed the staff and was given a four year scholarship. Monicah is now one of Daraja's top-performing students. She is an exceptional, dedicated student and has always managed to be among the top 3 students of her class. Her favorite subject is Science.

Would you be willing to sponsor me?

Here are some examples of what your contribution might provide:

$25: A student's school uniform

$ 45: A student's school supplies such as textbooks, exercise books (1 year)

$ 77, or a dollar a girl, would provide a backpack and all the necessary academic supplies for one girl for one year; or school uniforms for one student

$ 100: A student's meals (1 month)

$ 150: or two dollars a girl, would provide one girl access to healthcare for the year; doctor, dentist and optician appointments at a quality facility

Any sponsorship amount would be welcome – all gifts make a tremendous difference!

Thank you in advance for your support of me and the girls of Daraja!

Note: All gifts are tax-deductible: The Carr Educational Foundation, Daraja’s parent organization is a nonprofit tax-exempt organization under IRS code 501c3, EIN #20-8283551
