Bay to Breakers... in Keyna? Daraja Race for 77! http://bit.ly/fNdKFn  See more
Kelly Dugan

THE STORY:

Remember when we....

Dressed in the most ridiculous costume we could find...
Poured our first adult beverage before 8 AM...
Got separated almost immediately from the group we came with...
Stopped at every dance party...
Begged "Tom" who lives on Hayes Street to use his bathroom...
Found our friends who first got lost....
Never actually made it to the Breakers....
And ultimately called in sick the next day because we ALL came down with the “Flu."

As we approach the 100th Annual Bay to Breakers...

We have added a bonus feature: Do Some Good.

How, you ask? Allow us to explain Daraja Race for 77!

77 Kenyan girls half way across the world will be participating in their own version of Bay to Breakers (Rated: PG) at Daraja Academy on the very same day we voluntarily act like fools.

We are asking YOU to join us in partnering with Tina, a Form 3 student at Daraja Academy, as her personal cheerleaders!

Tina will be running 7.5 Miles, i.e. 28 Laps, on the Daraja school campus.

$1/lap? $10/lap? You choose the level you want to support Tina.

But let us say this— the more money you donate, the better you’ll feel about your own life choices on May 15th (think about it…).

Do Some Good. Donate Responsibly.

TINA'S STORY:

Christina "Tina" Pessi is from the Maasai tribe, a tribe that historically doesn't value girls’ education. She is also a twin. Upon their graduation from class eight, her sister was allowed to continue on to secondary school, while Tina was asked to stay home. The average cost to attend high school in Kenya is $500. Families must pay for tuition, as well as school supplies and uniforms. As a result of these steep costs for most impoverished Kenyan families, the drop out rate from elementary school to high school is 80%. Tina's life path was headed toward making her part of that statistic.

Fortunately,Tina received a four year scholarship from Daraja Academy...a twist in her fate that will not only change the course of her future, but that of her siblings and future children. When a woman is educated, she invests 90% of it back into her family, while men invest only 30-40% back into their families..

DARAJA'S STORY:

Daraja Academy is a boarding secondary school for Kenyan girls with top academic scores and exceptional leadership skills but no means to continue their education.  The academy provides shelter, food, healthcare and counseling services, which allows students to focus on their academic and personal potential, without being hindered by the everyday barriers of poverty.

Together, we can help educated girls transcend poverty and change the world. Click here to learn more about Daraja Academy.
