Darfuri Refugee Community Organization in Tucson

THE STORY:

The incomprehensible violence that has ravaged Darfur for the last decade continues to this day, leaving millions without their loved ones, their homes, and unable to continue their traditional ways of life. Children are born to the desolation of life in a refugee camp instead of the comfort of a family farm, men for whom their livestock was their source of pride and accomplishment can no longer feel that connection to their past, and families separated by war and genocide yearn to reestablish the communities that were shattered.

The United States has resettled thousands of men, women, and children from Darfur in the last several years, with the Tucson community being one of the most welcoming, and many have found hope in their new home, along with a renewed sense of self-reliance, through the generosity of their new neighbors.

The time has come for those refugees who can now support themselves to start building an organization that can provide the sense of belonging that war once took from them. With your help, they will begin several new projects including:

Urban Farming - In partnership with Chiva Risa Dairy in Hereford, AZ, low cost meat will be available for harvest through traditional halal practices, enabling individuals to reengage in practices unavailable until now. Your help will provide for feed, vaccinations, and compensation for milk loss as kids are weaned from their mothers.

Community Meeting Spaces - You help will provide the start-up funds for Darfuri refugees to find spaces to meet, plan activities, and reconnect with each other.

Emergency Relief Funds - The Darfuri community in Tucson is close. When a member is sick, the community feels it deeply. With your help they will be able to provide emergency assistance to vulnerable individuals in situations where self-reliance is no longer an option.

Thank you. The world may have passed by the atrocities in Darfur, but we in Tucson can still make a positive, meaningful, important contribution to renewing the lives of our new neighbors and friends.

The project and the people pulling it together deserve our support because they have the best interests of the Darfuri refugee community front and center. Let your friends and family know and make your contribution grow with theirs. 3 years ago
