This year will be my first Bay to Breakers race - as well as my first year involved with Daraja! Working with Daraja over the last few months has been a really special experience - I continue to be inspired by the stories of Daraja's girls and their persistent motivation and commitment to an education that so many of us here take for granted.
Joining me this year are my good friend Blaire and my father Gary. The three of us will be supporting Hannah Nduta, a Form 2 (sophomore year) student at Daraja.
Hannah has a sparkling personality to match her smile and admires courageous people. She hopes to one day become respected by her community. Hannah strives to be a strong woman like her mother, who divorced her father after years of harassment and abuse. “When I was home I never, never thought I would be fortunate enough to attend secondary school.”
Hannah’s mom did the best she could do for Hannah and her brother, Caleb, but even still they often went without food. “We would eat what was there. Coming to Daraja and never having to be hungry is like a dream that has come true.”
Hannah’s favorite activity in her free time is leading prayers and worship and spending time with her close girlfriends. She admires courageous people and hopes to be respected by her community. “When I grow up,” Hannah said, “I would like to become an accountant.” Hannah is intent on helping another girl the way the Daraja Academy has helped her.
Thank you all for supporting these incredible girls - keep it up.
