THE STORY:

A note from Kim: Dolphins don't belong in captivity. They are highly intelligent, emotional beings. Captivity leads to depression, madness, and premature death. Dolphins are forcibly taken from their ocean home in "drive hunts" (where they are harassed, chased, and herded into small coves), transported under great stress around the world, deprived of food, and forced to perform tricks for human entertainment. The ones that don't get "chosen" for a life of captivity are often brutally slaughtered. It can take upwards of 15 minutes for them to die this painful death. There is nothing entertaining and nothing educational about watching dolphins in captivity. Their behavior in captivity is so far removed from their lives in the wild, it's ridiculous to compare the two. The only thing to be learned from captive dolphins is a lesson in inflicting psychological trauma and fueling human greed. Stop the shows, stop the slaughter. End captivity, end the hunts. Empty the tanks! A note from Ric O'Barry about the Dolphin Project's work: Because of your contribution, the Dolphin Project will be able to keep our Cove Monitors on the ground in Taiji, Japan during the annual hunt from September 1 until May 1. I'll be able to stay in the field, traveling throughout the world wherever and whenever a dolphin is in trouble. I'll participate in events which promote the welfare and well-being of dolphins. And more importantly, I will act as a voice for dolphins. I am committed to putting an end to dolphin exploitation and slaughter once and for all. Since our organization began on Earth Day -- April 22, 1970, our mission has always been about the welfare and protection of dolphins worldwide. Over the past 46 years we have rescued, rehabilitated and released many dolphins back into the wild. Dolphin Project has pioneered this important work. We have worked tirelessly to put a permanent end to dolphin captivity. We have worked not only to halt the slaughter of dolphins in countries around the world, but also to investigate and advocate for economic alternatives to dolphin hunts. We will continue to lead the worldwide charge to end dolphin exploitation and suffering. This is only possible because of thoughtful contributions from people like you.
